Head of MUMS Department of Neurosurgery announced plans to launch a Pediatric Neurosurgery Ward at Akbar Hospital. According to Webda, Dr. Hamid Etemad Rezaie said, “A faculty member of the department is currently serving in Akbar Hospital and we are trying to set up a dedicated pediatric neurosurgery ward in that hospital in the near future.” He added, “Mashhad is the leading medical center in the region in three fields including surgical removal of brain tumors as well as intravenous and spinal cord surgeries. In other words, MUMS covers eastern Iran and the eastern neighbor countries concerning those three areas and this testifies that our department has been successful.” “We have a stereotaxy fellowship. Only 3 or 4 centers in Iran are equipped with stereotaxy systems, by which we can reach any point inside the brain and deep, inaccessible brain lesions. The system is not available in our eastern neighbor countries, and some patients from Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan are therefore referred to Emam Reza Hospital for treatment,” he noted. Dr. Etemad Rezaie continued, “Also in the field of spinal cord diseases, novel and highly advanced surgical techniques are already used at the university by young professors and fellows, and highly interesting research papers are also published each year on treatment of brain tumors and vascular lesions.” “Clinical visits, counseling at different hospital wards, surgical operations, and visiting patients hospitalized at the neurosurgery ward are some of the activities of Department of Neurosurgery faculty members. In addition, the department holds educational sessions each year for various groups of general practitioners, nurses, operating room technicians, and residents in other specialties, where new and up-to-date information is offered to the medical community,” he said. Dr. Etemad Rezaie finally announced that five neurosurgeons annually graduate from the School of Medicine, and 28 residents (1st to 5th year) are currently being trained theoretically and practically by Department of Neurosurgery. |
