About 200 Cases of Hypnosis Application for Post-Surgical Pain Control in Mashhad

Associate Professor of Cardiac Anesthesiology at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said, “So far, hypnosis has been used for controlling post-surgical pain in about 200 patients in the form of MUMS approved research projects.”

According to Webda, Dr. Mahdi Fathi added, “Inguinal hernia and gallbladder surgeries, replacing wound dressings in deeply burned patients, and endoscopy are examples of hypnosis application for postoperative pain management. Hypnosis has also been used to replace local anesthesia during surgery in many cases, such as wisdom tooth surgery and root canal therapy.”

“A number of clinical studies in cardiac and general surgery at Emam Reza Hospital of Mashhad showed that hypnosis is very effective in managing preoperative anxiety of patients and it can reduce anxiety and medication requirements and expedite discharge from the hospital and therefore reduce hospitalization costs,” he continued.

Dr. Fathi said, “For the first time in the world, two surgical operations on hand and on Knee joint cruciate ligaments were performed at Emam Reza Hospital without any kind of general or local anesthesia and only by inducing hypnosis. There were also 3 cases of hypnosis-assisted natural delivery. Mashhad University of Medical Sciences is a leader in clinical application of hypnosis for pain management during and after surgery.”

Referring to restrictions of hypnosis he noted, “In some cases, for instance psychosis and severe depression, hypnosis is not only useless but also prohibited because it can exacerbate the disease; and some people, for example the mentally disabled, lack the capacity to be hypnotized.”

Dr. Fathi finally noted that credible references consider hypnosis to be effective against many psychiatric disorders, but it should be definitely practiced by a psychiatrist or psychotherapist.
