Member of Board of Directors of the Cancer Association said: “controlling, managing and reversing the increasing trend of cancer requires change in attitudes and a focus on prevention and early diagnosis by the related authorities including the Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education”. According to WebDa, in the sideline of international Nastaran Cancer Symposium, Dr. Ali Motavallizadeh Ardakani said: “it is not possible to control the worrying, growing trend of this disease by focusing on treatment and hospitals”. Pointing that 21st century medicine is based on early diagnosis and prevention while in our country the attitude towards cancer is treatment-based, he added: “we need a fundamental change in the authorities’ attitude towards cancer”. Referring to remarks made by Vice Deputy for Research at the Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education regarding the fact that 20 percent of the health budget is spent on cancer and its treatment, Dr. Motavallizadeh Ardakani added: “of 65000 billion tomans health budget, about 13000 billion tomans is spent to cure cancer while nothing is spent to prevent from this disease”. He said: “according to formal statistics, if this trend continues, by 2035, 18, 0000 people will get cancer annually while currently about 100,000 people get cancer”. Pointing that 5 to 10 percent of factors affecting cancer are hereditary, he said: “90 percent of these factors are related to the environment and lifestyle including nutrition, exercise, anxiety-generating factors and pollution”. He said: “besides measures taken by the related authorities, improving the conditions requires education from kindergarten to university by the education system and ministries of science, research and technology and health, treatment and medical education”. Talking to WebDa, Dr. Ehsan Sarafraz Yazdi, expert in cancer biology said: “preventing from cancer is associated with people’s lifestyle including nutrition, ongoing exercise and reduced daily stress”. “People with histories of cancer in their family should be more aware of the disease and perform annual screening tests”, he added. |
