At a ceremony attended by Health Ministry Hasan Hashemi, PhD, Eye Bank was opened at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, WEBDA reported.
It will be a research and training center aimed at developing sclera and corneal transplantations.
Possessing infrastructure of 700 square meters, Eye Bank is a clinic located in Danesh and Salamat Town. It features administrative units as well as clean room.
The room characterizes units of acceptance, washing and experiments, operation and packing, reserving and sending the donated part to applicant units.
The bank preserves ocular tissues of donor-bodies for corneal and sclera transplantations. Its mission is to make people aware of therapeutic and humane values of transplantation. Also, it encourages people to donate their cornea following death.

The bank’s approach is based on resistance economy and its construction standards have been approved by Health Ministry.
Furthermore, given the importance of Health Tourism, the bank can play a significant role in developing tourism in Mashhad.
Boosting medical education, conducting applied scientific research as well as lowering costs of sending patients to other regions are among other vital aspects of Eye Bank.
