Educational Program of Medical Students

Conditions for admission to the faculty of medicine are as follows:
Applicants are required to have the high school diploma (diplomas received abroad must be confirmed by the ministry of education), to pass the related entrance examination, and to have no physical disability.
 
Length of the program is 7 years, which can be extended to 10 years at most. The students are required to pass the following courses:
Basic Sciences courses: 92 credits
Physiopathology courses: 33 credits
Externship courses: 96 credits
Internship courses: 72 credits
Thesis: 6 credits
 
Basic Sciences Courses

The aim of these courses, which are offered in 5 semesters, is to study human anatomy, physiological functions of a healthy body, pathogenic biological factors and the body defense mechanisms, principles of lesions and principles of health issues.
 
Physiopathology Courses                                                                                              Top

Physiopathology courses are offered after the students pass a comprehensive test of the basic sciences courses. The aim of these courses is to teach the students, in an analytic manner, the basics of physiology, mechanisms of diseases and effective factors that cause them, as well as their symptoms and diagnoses.
The Physiopathology courses offered are as follows: Semiology, physiopathology, specific pathology and pharmacology. These courses are offered in one year.
 
Clinical Externship Courses

The aim of these courses is to enable the students to do clinical and laboratory diagnosis of diseases and to gain the necessary skill in using the mind and making logical decisions when dealing with a patient and to suggest appropriate treatments and preventive methods.
During these courses, which are offered in 21 months, the students acquire the necessary skills in the hospital and with real patients. Getting a pass mark in the pre-internship test is prerequisite for enrollment at the internship courses.
 
Clinical Internship Courses

The aim of these courses is to develop the students’ skills, to strengthen their power of decision making and to increase their self confidence by delegating responsibility to them. Using their theoretical knowledge, the students are in direct contact with patients, treating them through clinical examinations and paraclinical tests.
All these activities are carried out under the supervision of the professors and the related assistants. Internship courses are offered in 18 months.

Writing a thesis is the last requirement of the medical program.
The student is required to carry out a project under the supervision of a supervisor, who is chosen upon the suggestion of the student and agreement of the supervisor and the department. The thesis is evaluated by a board of examiners consisting of the supervisor and at least two members of the teaching staff or researchers or specialists in the field chosen by the department.
Each thesis must have an abstract of at least 300 words in English, French or German. General doctoral theses must be presented and defended. The viva session is attended by the supervisor, head of the department, a member of the teaching staff chosen by the head of the department, and two members of the teaching staff chosen by the education assistant director of the faculty or the related center.
 
Assistantship Program

Having completed the general medical program, the candidates may take the entrance examination of specialized courses. The duration of the specialized program is 3 to 5 years, as stated in the table of ìclinical sciences courses and degrees.
 
The Pre-Board Examination

This written examination is held annually, usually in July, in the universities throughout the country. Lat year assistants who pass an internal examination of the university are introduced to the faculty so that they may take the nationwide preboard examination. Obtaining 3 minimum scores, as tabulated below, is the necessary condition for passing the examination.
Upon passing the certification exam, the assistant is considered as specialist in the related field.
 
How the National Board Exam is held:                                                                           TOP 
     

The students who pass the certification stage can participate in the national board exam which is held in September every year. To pass the national board exam, the student must get at least 70 percent of the points in oral and written exams. The graduates will be able to apply for a teaching post or for higher programs (fellowship, super-specialization). The applicants, who pass the written exam but fail in the oral exam, can take again the oral exam the following year. The pass result is valid for five years.
