Department of Neurosurgery and Spine in Faculty of Medicine
History
Imam Reza (PBUH) hospital was inaugurated in 1928 and in 1975 was transferred to the University. The first pierce the skull, and cranial bone cases has been operated by Professor van Bull and some of the students in 1961. Most neurosurgical patients endure its complications, unless they could reach centers in Tehran. Since 1970 classic neurosurgical surgery was first done by the late Dr Gholamreza Sheybani and then by Dr. Abdolsaleh Salehi in Imam Reza (PBUH) Hospital. There were two independent Neurosurgical treatment units in Ghaem hospital and Imam Reza Hospital. The one in Imam Reza was dissolved in 1979 and was transferred to Shahid Kamyab Hospital. The units in Ghaem hospital and Shahid Kamyab hospital later were converted to the educational sectors. Since 1982 the doctor Alireza Birjandi was appointed as Head Neurosurgery in Ghaem Hospital and then in 1985 the Head of Neurosurgery in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. . Since 1992 every year, up to Four residents have been accepted and graduated from the neurosurgery department and so far has had twenty-seven graduates.
